How much does a small wedding cost in Southern California?

It depends on two things: how many people you invite, and how the venue charges. Here the whole cost is per person, starting at $199 for the park set up, staffed, coordinated, and cleaned up, and at $239 with dinner served. That puts a wedding here somewhere between about $7,200 and $19,100 before sales tax: a micro wedding of thirty at one end, a full eighty at the other, and both sit well in this park.

What is a food and beverage minimum?

A minimum the venue requires you to spend on catering, whether your guests eat it or not. Come in under it, and you are billed the difference anyway. Ask about it before anything else, because it is the one line that decides whether a shorter guest list saves you any money at all. We do not have one.

Does a smaller wedding actually cost less?

Only if the venue charges by the person. When there is a site fee with a guest minimum sitting under it, most of your cost is locked in before you have invited a soul, so trimming the list saves a little on food and almost nothing else. Here you pay per person against your final count, with a floor of thirty.

What does all-inclusive actually mean?

It means different things at different venues, so it is always worth asking what is inside it. Here it means Premium: the park to yourselves, the setup, the staff, the coordination, the clean-up, and a buffet dinner of hand-carved proteins served by wait staff. Traditional is all of that without the meal, which is why we do not call it all-inclusive.

What is not in these numbers?

Your own vendors, mostly: flowers, photography, music, and anything anyone drinks. Beer and wine are available here; spirits are not. Everything the venue itself does on the day is already in the per-person price, and we keep a list of the vendors we trust for the rest.

Catering, rentals, staff — almost every line on a wedding quote is a price multiplied by a head count. So your whole budget comes down to one question: whose head count? Yours, or the venue’s minimum?

Most venues on this mountain set a floor: sixty guests, seventy-five, sometimes a hundred. You pay for all of them whether they show up or not, and the number is often locked in the day you sign. Invite forty to a venue priced for a hundred, and you have just paid for sixty empty chairs.

These are the lines that turn an attractive headline price into the number you actually pay. Below is what each one does to a total, and where each one lands here. Take the list with you on every tour.

The site fee: Usually: A flat charge just for the grounds, quoted before anyone has eaten a thing. It is the number most venues lead with, and almost never the number you end up paying.; Willow Woods: None. The per-person price covers the park itself.

The rentals: Usually: Tables, chairs, linens, glassware, flatware. A third-party list, priced item by item and delivered on somebody else's schedule.; Willow Woods: Sixty-six-inch rounds, banquet chairs, floor-length linens, plates, glasses, flatware. Set out before you arrive and cleared after you leave, in both packages.
The hours: Usually: A window shorter than the day you are picturing, with overtime charged by the hour the moment you run past it.; Willow Woods: Five hours on Traditional, six on Premium, and neither the setup before nor the clean-up after counts against your time. Music stops at ten, the ordinance every venue up here lives under.
Sales tax: Usually: It applies to the food and the rentals, not to the whole subtotal, so you cannot add one percentage to the bottom line and call it done.; Willow Woods: 7.75% in San Bernardino County. It is the only thing added to the per-person price.

The average wedding is not your wedding

Every published average for a California wedding is built on a guest list two or three times the size of yours, and most of that number is simply food multiplied by people.

So the average tells you what a hundred-and-fifty-person wedding costs. It tells you nothing at all about forty, because the venues behind that number were never built for forty.
